Switching to renewable energy sources such as sun and wind is only possible if the required base load for the energy supply can be covered. Tidal and river energy can fill this gap. In Northwest Europe, however, this capability has so far been underutilised.
What if we published an atlas that showed us where tidal and river energy could be utilised? 14 organisations from six countries have come together within the SHINES project to advance the use of tidal and river energy in Northwest Europe.
We will use modelling studies and data analyses to create an Atlas of tidal and river energy. Feasibility studies will be carried out at ten promising locations. Additionally, innovative pilot plants will be constructed at three sites: Paimpol-Bréhat, Ameland and Bordeaux.
Over three years, we will demonstrate strategies to harness the tidal and river energy. Step for step Europe will succeed in becoming independent from fossil fuel sources. In promoting the use of renewable energies, the SHINES project is doing its part in reaching the global climate goals.
